James L. Heft

James Heft received his B.A. and B.S.Ed. Degrees from the University of Dayton; received M.A. and Ph.D. (Historical Theology) from the University of Toronto. He went to the University of Dayton in 1977 as an Instructor in the Department of Religious Studies; Chairperson of Religious Studies, 1983-1989; Provost, 1989-1996; University Professor of Faith and Culture and Chancellor, 1996----. He published "John XXII (1316-1334) and Papal Teaching Authority"in 1986, and two edited books, "Faith and the Intellectual Life"(1996), and "A Catholic Modernity" (1999), and over 125 articles. He is currently working on a book on higher education. He serves on the editorial board of three journals. In 1997, he was appointed to the US Bishops' Committee on Education. 1998-2000, he served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies. In June, 2002, Jim Heft began his sabbatical to be the President and Founding Director of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies.
